It can be related to hyperthyroidism, in which case it is known as a toxic goiter; nontoxic refers to those with normal thyroid function, or low levels (hypothyroidism). Another classification is a diffuse goiter, in which it has spread through the entire thyroid gland. Along with the enlarged neck, a goiter may also lead to difficulty swallowing and/or breathing.
