Soft Relining and Hard Relining Dentures

If you’ve recently gotten premier dentures but they don’t fit quite right you may need a denture reline, which is a simple procedure to ultimately reshape the underside of the dentures so that it fits just right inside of your mouth. When dentures lose their grip inside your mouth, that’s usually when relining is necessary. To learn more about what happens during a denture reline keep reading below.

The process of relining dentures is a very affordable procedure and only takes a very little bit of time to accomplish. There are two different kinds of relining when it comes to dentures which refer to as soft and had. Each type of relining has its advantages and disadvantages.

Why is Denture Relining Necessary?
When you have a tooth or teeth that need to be removed, the bone that once surrounded the roots of those teeth will eventually begin to deteriorate. Because of this, the body will the repurpose all of the resources that are sent to the bone since it no longer has to surround the tooth.

When you’ve had tooth loss for an extended period of time while wearing dentures it changes the overall shape of the jaw and the gum lines. Because of this, your dentures will begin to fit looser, and eventually, they will begin to slip. Such a process begins shortly and rapidly after the months following your teeth removal.

This process does start to slow down for the rest of each patient's life but usually, a denture reline is absolutely necessary for your dentures that nice tight fit that matches the patient’s new shape of their mouth over time.

Soft Denture Reline

Usually, soft relines are preferred. For patients who are experinecing more rapid bone loss, this procedure tends to be more comfortable for them especially if they have just started using dentures. Most of the time a dentist will use a liquid polymer that adds depth to the dentures. While doing so the patients will inform the dentist how the dentures particularly feel to help the dentist securely fit the dentures.

This procedure is fairly quick and one the number one benefits of doing soft reling is that patients who are having it done don’t have to wait for their dentures to come back from the lab. However, because of the material that is used to soft-reline dentures they can need to be frequently relined.

Hard Denture Reline

Unlike soft relining dentures hard reline uses a more durable material. The process of hard relining is essentially the exact same as soft relining. However hard reling last for years longer than soft relines and the procedure is done in the dentist office.,

Most of the time dentists opt for using a lab due to the issues with the overall material that is used. However, if patients have sensitive gums it can be uncomfortable for them to have it done.

In the case that a patient has sensitive gums the hard reline treatment can lead to sore spots in the mouth.
