Working in a flexible and non-traditional work environment can tempt us into adopting unhealthy habits. Improper ergonomic furniture etiquette can be one of the many reasons contributing to a harmful work approach and consequently affect your lifestyle and health.
1. Don’t place the laptop on your lap.
Placing your laptop on your lap may seem fine, but after a while, you will strain your neck because you need to bend to view the screen. Your posture slouches and puts a lot of pressure on the bend of your spine. You can use an ergonomic laptop stand to raise the laptop if you can’t use a desk; for example, while commuting, use your bag to prop it up and elevate your laptop to bring it closer to eye level.
2. Lift the screen to a proper level.
Your screen should be at a height that allows you to view it comfortably by bending or twisting your neck. Adjust the angle of the screen and its height to ensure that you can look straight at the top third portion of the screen without breaking your posture. If you need to travel, consider getting a portable laptop stand to bring the screen to eye level.
3. Invest in external input/output devices.
Those who work on a laptop for extended periods are advised to use external keyboards, mouse or monitor to avoid strain and chronic health issues. You can do one of two things:-
Use an external keyboard to type comfortably and position the laptop at eye level on a desk.
Use an external monitor at eye level and adjust your laptop to use the keyboard with your arms and shoulders relaxed.
While sitting in front of the screen, your back should be straight, your arms and shoulders relaxed, and your elbows tucked in at a 90-degree angle. This position prevents you from pulling neck muscles and getting back pains. You can also get ergonomic laptop stands for desks to accommodate the external devices effectively.
