Montego Bay has earned the distinction of being the leading tourist destination in all of Jamaica, and as such it's packed with tourists from all over the world throughout most of the year. There are many things to do in Montego Bay, but there are also some lesser-known facts about this bustling city that aren't found in any tourist guides. Here are five little-known facts about Montego Bay that you might not have known before now.
1) Magic Mountain Fun Park, Montego Bay
Many people think of a theme park when they hear Montego Bay, but that's not where you'll find one—that would be in Ocho Rios. Instead, try Magic Mountain Fun Park, which offers several different thrill rides and shows. The location is easy to access by public transportation and parking is plentiful. The park does not charge for admission; you pay for individual rides as you go along. Everything from simple kiddie cars to heart-pounding roller coasters can be found at Magic Mountain Fun Park, so bring your family and have a great time! One last note: If you don't feel like traveling all that way just to visit a theme park, fear not—you can find most of these same attractions in Ocho Rios!
2) Underwater Observatory at White River Bay
I wasn’t aware of White River Bay until I was touring a city in St. Maarten. They referred to it as Montego Bay’s underwater observatory and said it was worth visiting (if you could get there). It is a very unique attraction that can only be experienced in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Underwater observatories are fairly new attractions so having one within an hour drive of my house (Jamaica) was exciting! Make sure you visit if you get a chance!
3) Pirate's World Adventure Golf, Montego Bay
The golf course has a lush tropical setting, a lighthouse and sea vistas and fire-breathing pirates. It's like Disneyland, but on steroids. This 18-hole mini golf course is featured in dozens of movies including Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Dawn of the Dead. Tourists love it because they can pretend to be Pirates while playing with alligators. They need to visit 'Pirate's World' if they are looking for adventure in a one day tour from Kingston.
4) Dunn's River Falls
A natural attraction in Jamaica, Dunn's River Falls is a set of steep steps that lead to a waterfall. The climb up is an exercise in dexterity and agility, as most tourists are advised to use their hands instead of feet for climbing. Since its discovery by sea captain William Bligh (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame), Dunn's River Falls has become one of Jamaica's top tourist attractions. But, did you know... According to myth, Dunn's River got its name from an 18th-century pirate named Daniel Dunne who lost both his legs while attempting to scale an island cliff at Ocho Rios?
5) Driftwood Beach at Half Moon Bay
I know it sounds cliché, but trust me when I say that you have to see Half Moon Bay (aka Driftwood Beach) at sunset. It's as picturesque as they come. Couples stroll around barefoot, cuddling and giggling, while groups of friends climb on every piece of driftwood they can find. There's even a makeshift bar set up under a tent where you can order pina coladas and daiquiris while sitting in wicker chairs and watching everyone play volleyball on the sand. If you're looking for an unforgettable scene, Half Moon Bay is it!
