Knowing EGR Off: Advantages, Drawbacks, and Thoughts

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) systems are commonly found in modern diesel and gasoline engines, designed to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by redirecting a portion of exhaust gases back into the intake. While this mechanism plays a crucial role in emission control, some vehicle owners choose to disable it through a process known as EGR off. This modification alters engine parameters to prevent exhaust gases from recirculating, impacting performance, fuel efficiency, and longevity.
