What are the uses of spill kits?

One of the biggest advantages of having a spill kit on hand is that all the elements required for cleaning up a spill and dealing with it are combined together in one spot allowing for fast action to address and resolve the problem efficiently and effectively before it gets out of hand.

All personal should know where all spill kits are located throughout your facility and be adequately trained in their proper use.

In most places where there are hazardous materials used or stored it is mandatory to have spill kits in strategic areas and to have a personal who are trained in how to use them in order to cope with any spillage or situation, that may arise from any such spillage.

Safety Equipment

A spill kit should also include any safety equipment that may be required by anyone who is using the spill kit or dealing with any spillage and should include safety signage to alert others entering the area of the hazard presented by the spillage.

Peace of Mind

When a company provides appropriate spill kits and gives emergency response training to all personal, it promotes a feeling of confidence and peace of mind in the workplace.

Types of Spill Kits

Spill kits come in a variety of forms depending on the size of the facility, the amount and type of hazardous material stored and how volatile it is or the level of danger it represents to personal, property or the environment.

Universal Spill Kits

Universal spill kits are generally used in areas where the level of danger to personal and the environment is low and there are a variety of materials that could present only a low level spillage threat

Specialized Spill Kits

These types of spill kits are designed for addressing the problems of a particular type of spill involving the exact types of hazardous materials that are present in that particular area of a facility. Sometimes when there are multiple hazardous chemicals present in the same or adjacent areas there may be several different spill kits or one large spill kit that is able to cope with all the hazards represented

Deigns of Spill Kits

The design of a spill kit is usually determined by the size of the hazard, it’s created to deal with. Spill kits can be small enough to be stored under desks or on shelves as could be the case in an office spill kit or so large they need to be tailored in order to move and accommodate them some common types of spill kit are:

Spill kits made to be hung on the wall in a cabinet or bag
Under bench spill kits
Duffel bag spill kits designed for truckers on the road
Spill kits in a wheeled bin that also serves as a receptacle for any of the recovered hazardous material
Large spill kits for industrial storage facilities are often motorized and require a team of highly trained technicians to operate

Spill kits are made to be used to make workplaces and the environment in general safe after a spillage and to clean up any potential threats to the environment from the materials companies and individuals store and use.
