Review of the game Shadow of the Colossus

Released in 2005 for the PlayStation 2 console, the game Shadow of the Colossus suddenly became a cult game. This was largely due to the revolutionary gameplay for that time and the unusual setting chosen by the developers from Team Ico. In 2011, the HD Remaster of the PlayStation 3 game was released, and very soon, namely on February 7, its full-length remake for the PlayStation 4 will go on sale, which I want to tell you in more detail today.

Shadow of the Colossus is part of a surprisingly rich universe in which the events of two other great games unfold - Ico and The Last Guardian. The author of these works, Fumito Ueda, doesn’t like to reveal secrets to gamers and chew strange moments, therefore his works are always shrouded in mystery, and over time they become overgrown with fan theories and millions of guesses. It seems to me that it is this intrigue that makes the games of a talented Japanese game designer even more attractive.

The plot of Shadow of the Colossus is simple and clear at first glance. The protagonist named Wander (Wander - "wander", Eng.) Astride the faithful horse Agro delivers the body of his deceased lover Mono to the ancient temple. Placing it on the stone altar, he calls on the dark deity Dormin, begging him to bring the girl back to life. Dormin agrees to help the young man, but instead requests to perform a difficult task: to find and kill the sixteen giant colossi that inhabit the territory of the spacious valley.

You can travel around the valley both on foot and on Agro. The latter method is much more preferable, as sometimes it is necessary to overcome great distances. An important role is also played by the sword of the main character, who, being taken out of the scabbard, is able to focus the sunlight and point in the direction where the next colossus is located. Enough non-standard navigation system, but even more interesting to play. Despite the fact that the game is trying with all its might to create the illusion of an “open world”, it will be necessary to kill the colossi in a strict sequence, thought out in advance by the writers. Unfortunately, you will not be able to go to any of the monsters of your choice.

Each colossus match is a real test for gray matter and gamer's fingers. Monsters are gigantic creatures made of stone, living flesh, various structures, along which the main character must climb, trying to find vulnerable spots with luminous glyphs and plunge his blade into them. And if the very first colossus is not very clever and mobile, then with each subsequent boss the rules of the game will become more complicated eaven then bets on https://esportsbetstar.com/. You will have to hunt them down, think over the strategy of attacks, take into account the peculiarities of the landscape and even use the help of your horse Agro in order to defeat the monsters. It is the battle with huge creatures that underlie this game and, take my word for it, it only gains from it.

Control of the game is quite simple and intuitive. The main skill of the protagonist is the ability to grab various projections, colossus wool and other objects. Climbing on the cliffs or backs of giant monsters, we should not forget that the protagonist has a limited amount of stamina, and as soon as the forces leave him, you run the risk of breaking from a great height and breaking on stony ground. During the battle, you can use your sword, which will tell you exactly where you need to climb on the colossus to find its weak point. There are other auxiliary tools in the game, for example, a bow that can attract the attention of the boss. Personally, it seemed to me that the management became more responsive than the original for PS2 could not boast. This is facilitated by additional control schemes, which were not in the original game.

If you think that the fights will look like one another, you are greatly mistaken. You will meet not only land colossi, but also flying and even underwater monsters. The entertainment of these fights is so impressive that you sometimes forget that you are playing a game. Sometimes it seems that you are watching an expensive Hollywood blockbuster. Your mind is completely transferred to the eerie fairy-tale world, attracting myriads of secrets hidden in it. Despite the fact that for the most part the world of the game is deserted, occasionally you will meet representatives of the fauna, for example, lizards, which can be eaten, thereby increasing the level of health.

Visually, the game was created from scratch, which immediately catches the eye. The picture is so clear, bright and detailed that I absolutely do not want to go back to the original PS2 version or even to the HD-remaster. For the development of the Shadow of the Colossus sample of 2018, the studio was responsible Bluepoint Games, which ate more than one dog on the reprint of classic games. Previously, they were engaged in HD-Remaster Iso.
