If there is one word that can describe the gorgeous Mastani in Bajirao Mastani, it is ethereal. Deepika Padukone never looked so stunning and the woman behind it, Anju Modi, has been lauded for the striking ensembles with a Filmfare recently. Working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali — a man with a keen eye for detail, how difficult or easy was it?

Sanjay is a very thorough and detail-oriented person and sometimes it is challenging to meet the expectations within given timelines. However, he supported me through the script-reading sessions and explained nuances of the scenes and characters. The "preparatory phase" involved many intellectually stimulating conversations, where we would discuss the complete look and then break it down to colours, silhouettes and styling, the jewellery, et al.

What has Anju Modi given to Bajirao Mastani and vice versa?

A lot more has been exchanged for about a year — from script-reading and storytelling to capturing all the nuances. Through the entire filming process, it's as if I have lived the three characters. When I saw the film, I realised SLB was always pushing me to create the best.
