What is a Mala?
To begin with, we need to look at what malas are briefly. Typically made from precious gemstones, but sometimes also made from quality wooden beads and seeds, malas are meditation tools. They are used to help provide focus and intention for your meditation session. They can be a useful tool for enhancing your normal meditation methods.
History of the Mala
The mala itself was invented about 3000 years ago in India, in line with Hinduism and Buddhism. However, their use is dated as far back, potentially as 70,000BCE according to Golden Lotus Mala! As such, it can be seen that even early generations of our ancestors were practicing self-awareness in their own way, and these skills are something that can still be relevant in our busy modern world.
The mala can be used during meditation or during prayer sessions to provide a sense of focus and sincerity. They are made from a string of 108 – exactly 108 – beads and then infused with intention, which helps provide the results the owner of the mala desires.
The number 108 is vital in the creation of malas. This is because the number has a link to creation. It is also believed to be a number that represents the universe itself.
