There are many foods of Mexican origin that are great for health, and each one has different nutrients, important and necessary for our diet.
However, have you ever wondered what they are and how you can healthily include them in your meals? Nutritionist Karen Saldívar, University Clinic Nutrition Coordinator, answers these questions.
FOODS OF MEXICAN ORIGIN: HOW TO INCLUDE THEM IN OUR DIET
What are the foods of Mexican origin that cannot be missing from our daily diet?
These foods, by themselves, are very good for your health. They are rich in carbohydrates, like the corn tortilla; beans contain protein and chili is rich in vitamins.
From the times of the Aztecs, until today, the foods that have never been lacking are corn, beans and chili. These are basic in our daily diet, nutritionally and also culturally.
How can we integrate these foods into our meals in a healthy way? (form of preparation, cooking, etc.)
We can eat them in their natural state, unless they need to be cooked. The important thing is not to break down their nutritional value when overcooking, as many of these nutrients could be lost during cooking.
You also have to be careful not to mix them with butters, already burned oils and other saturated fats.
What elements or ingredients of Mexican food are not so recommended for health?
The reality is that Mexican food is rich in healthy ingredients, and it is not that it is unhealthy, but there are certain recipes with ingredients that have higher energy content such as butter.
You always have to have an adequate proportion of each food and take care of the consumption of industrialized products and the type of cooking that is being used.
Can we do without animal proteins if we consume more foods of Mexican origin?
Not always. The best thing to do is that the diet includes both foods of animal and vegetable origin. It is important to measure the consumption of animal proteins, since they are also rich in fats that can harm us.
If we have a good consumption of plant-based foods, we can have a good source of protein that provides good fats. But that is not why we should neglect animal proteins.
How many tortillas is recommended to include in our daily diet?
Not that there is a cap or standard daily recommendation. The consumption of tortillas depends more on the needs of each individual: how much energy each person needs.
To know your consumption of this and other foods, it is important that you approach nutrition experts.
