FM event to help those with hair loss planned

JOHNSTOWN — Students and staff from the Hamilton Fulton Montgomery Board of Cooperative Educational Services Career and Technical Education Cosmetology program will be donating their time to raise money and ponytail donations for the non-profit organization Hair We Share at Fulton Montgomery Community College on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

FMCC’s Community Outreach Club and the cosmetology program have partnered together to host annual hair donation events at the college for the past nine years, previously working with Pantene Great Lengths and Locks of Love.

Hair We Share is a non-profit organization that provides free hair pieces and wigs to both children and adults who have lost their hair due to medical illnesses. During Tuesday’s event, HFM BOCES cosmetology students and staff will be offering free haircuts and styling to individuals with eight inches of healthy ponytail to donate. According to the organization, the hair cannot be higlighted.

If you do not have 8 inches of hair to donate, you can receive a haircut and style for $10 or purchase a feather hair clip extension that staff will trim to the length of your hair and clip in for $10. All proceeds will be donated to Hair We Share.

Hair cuts and styling are primarily performed by seniors in the cosmetology program under the guidance of instructor Julie Mead. HFM BOCES cosmetology students acquire the knowledge, practical skills and 1,000 hour training requirement to meet New York State Cosmetology testing criteria, receiving a temporary license upon graduation.

The students practice hairstyling, hair shaping, hair coloring, hair extensions, wigs, chemical texture services, scalp and hair conditioning, skin care and make up, manicures, pedicures, nail art and artificial nail enhancements at a salon clinic open to members of the public.

Community Outreach Club Advisor Christie Davis said Friday that she has never had eight inches of hair to donate, but has had her hair trimmed by the students in the past and they’ve done a great job on both her hair and the hair of others.

According to Davis, past events have garnered an average of 10 hair donations a year and between $250 and $500. Davis emphasized that people don’t need to donate eight inches of hair to participate in the event, saying that a simple trim, feather clip purchase or monetary donation is a great way to get involved.

Davis noted that the removable and reusable feather clips are popular among students as a stylish, no commitment way to show support for an organization seeking to help individuals suffering from medically induced hair loss.

Hair We Share uses hair donations to provide customized, human hair wigs free of charge to anyone suffering from hair loss due to medical reasons that is financially unable to purchase one.

Davis noted that hair loss can come as the result of many medical conditions or treatments for illnesses, including many forms of cancer, often impacting a person’s self image during an already difficult time in their life. Receiving a custom made wig can be a simple way to improve a person’s outlook.

“You have all of these other things going on,” Davis said. “If there’s one thing you can do to get back your self esteem that’s great. They feel better, they feel like they look better and they can go back to fighting whatever illness they need to.”

The Hair We Share event will be held at FMCC in the “Pit” student study area below the theater in the visual arts and communications building. Students, staff and the public are welcome to participate.

For an appointment, please contact Christie Davis at FMCC, (518) 736-3622, Ext. 8163 or christie.davis@fmcc.edu. Walk-ins are welcome, appointments for 8 inch hair donations are preferred. All proceeds will be donated to Hair We Share.
