Elementary teachers dress alike for cause

Marsi Helgeson and Lori Edwards are teachers at Sacajawea Elementary School. The two are dressed alike in matching 1970s costumes to show their support for the American Heart Association, in conjunction with Jump Rope for Heart.

“Every month our leadership team at school has a dress-up day where students can dress a certain way for a specific cause,” Helgeson said. “February was wear something from the ’70s or ’80s and bring $1. All the money was donated to The American Heart Association. Throughout the year we raise money for different causes.”

The two are both wearing a brown corduroy fringed vest and a pair of corduroy floral tie-on bellbottoms. They borrowed the outfits from Helgeson’s sister-in-law who made them for another event she and her daughter attended.

“I wore this outfit to support a good cause and to have some fun. Dressing up in costumes is out of my character,” Edwards said. “As I was getting ready before school my daughter came in and said she was so proud of me for dressing up. It’s good for my students and my own children to see that I can let go and have a little fun too!”

Helgeson is also wearing a pair of Maurice’s jeans and a peasant top from Old Navy. Edwards is wearing a pair of Silver brand jeans from Herberger’s and a peasant top from Rue 21.

“The students wondered what those ‘leggy things’ were,” Helgeson said. “Obviously in their generation, they have not seen these. However, they told me that they liked my ‘leggy things.’

“The students at school were hilarious,” Edwards said. “We had some great laughs throughout the day.”
