Do I Need to Warm Up Before my First Basketball Game?

As a new basketball player, you might find yourself wondering whether it’s really going to be necessary for you to warm up before jumping into the action. After all, you might be thinking; you’re hardly going to be running laps of the court and shooting at the hoop the whole time – it’s your first go! This is something we often see with participants in our basketball camps, too; however, even if it’s your first ever experience of being on the basketball court, it’s still vital that you warm up properly and get your body ready for the action to come!

Why Warming Up Is Important

There are many different reasons as to why warming up before a basketball match is important. The most obvious of these reasons, though, is to get your body ready for exercise. During the match, even if it’s your first game, you’ll still be running around and getting active; if you jump straight in without getting your body and muscles prepared for this, to begin with, you’ll soon be feeling that horrid, unwelcome burn of lactic acid! And no one wants that, after all.

Warming up doesn’t need to take long, but it allows your body’s blood vessels to dilate and begin pumping blood around your body to your muscles. This ensures a good oxygen supply to the muscles, which allows them to create energy easily; the alternative is a process called anaerobic respiration, where the body has to create energy to move your muscles without oxygen. This process is inefficient and, ultimately, excruciating because of the lactic acid produced as a by-product.

No one likes lactic acid. It’s responsible for the searing pain you feel when you’ve worked out for too long – but warming up will help to prevent the onset of lactic acid build-up, allowing you to continue playing as normal for longer!

Always Warm Up Before Matches!

So, whether it’s your first match or your thirty-first match, it’s always important that you warm up effectively and give your body the time it needs to start working efficiently. If you fail to warm up before working out, you’ll likely find that your muscles are soon searing in pain from the lactic acid that has built up inside them, and this is going to make your first-ever basketball game an incredibly unpleasant one indeed. Don’t make this mistake; always warm up properly, and you’ll reap the rewards during the game!
