ACH Return Code List: Everything you Need to Know!

ACH return codes are numbers given to each ACH transaction to identify the outcome of a transaction. Each code provides an indication of why a payment was not successful and what action should be taken to resolve the issue. To help you understand these codes, we’ve put together this guide on ACH return codes, which covers everything from R01 to R11 and beyond.
 
R01 - Insufficient Funds: This code indicates that the customer did not have enough money in their account when attempting to make a payment or transfer. The customer will need to add funds to their account before they can successfully complete the transaction.
 
R02 - Account Closed: This code indicates that the customer’s account has been closed. The customer will need to open a new account before they can successfully complete the transaction.
 
R03 - No Account/Unable to Locate: This code indicates that the bank is unable to locate the customer’s account information. The customer will need to provide updated account information before they can successfully complete the transaction.
 
R04 - Invalid Account Number: This code indicates that the customer’s account number is incorrect or invalid. The customer will need to provide a valid account number before they can successfully complete the transaction.
R05 - Unauthorized Debit/Credit: This code indicates that the customer did not authorize the payment or transfer. The customer will need to contact the financial institution to authorize the transaction before they can successfully complete it.
 
R06 - Returned Item: This code indicates that the item being transferred or paid has been returned due to insufficient or uncollected funds, a stop payment request, suspicious activity, or other reasons. The customer will need to resolve any issues with the item before they can successfully complete the transaction.
R07 - Authorized Signature: This code indicates that the customer’s signature is required in order to complete the payment or transfer. The customer will need to provide an authorized signature before they can successfully complete the transaction.
 
R08 - Payment Stopped: This code indicates that the payment or transfer has been stopped due to a customer’s request. The customer will need to contact their financial institution to resolve any issues before they can successfully complete the transaction.
 
R09 - Uncollected Funds: This code indicates that the customer does not have sufficient funds in their account to cover the payment or transfer. The customer will need to add funds to their account before they can successfully complete the transaction.
 
R10 - Customer Advises Not Authorized: This code indicates that the customer has contacted their financial institution and advised them that they did not authorize the payment or transfer. The customer will need to contact their financial institution to resolve any issues before they can successfully complete the transaction.
 
R11 - Check Truncation Entry Returned: This code indicates that a check truncation entry has been returned due to an invalid routing number or account number, an incorrect payment amount, or other issues.
