A Short Guide About Peripheral Vascular Diseases

Peripheral vascular diseases encompassing the diagnosis and treatment of blood vessels present around the body, brain and heart. These have continued to be one of the main reasons for amputation in several countries including United States. Also known as PVD and peripheral artery disease (PAD), it manages the diseases related with blood circulation, blood vessels blocks (either completely or partially).

How is peripheral artery disease diagnosed?

During a physical examination, the doctor may look for signs that are indicative of peripheral artery disease, including weak or absent artery pulses in the extremities, specific sounds (called bruits) that can be heard over the arteries with a stethoscope, changes in blood pressure in the limbs at rest and/or afterexercise (treadmill test), and skin color and nail changes due to tissue ischemia.
