What are the recent changes in the US immigration system

The U.S. immigration system news encompasses the USCIS, that includes green cards, permanent residency, family sponsorship, temporary work visas, investor visas, and citizenship, that is updated up to November, 2020.

Effective from June 22, 2020, President Trump signed an executive order limiting the entry of certain foreign immigrants and non-immigrants into the U.S. This is in order to restrict the foreign workers from being employed in the U.S. in order to slow down the unemployment occurring due to the economic slowdown by the pandemic. However, on a positive note, there are many other options through which you can enter the U.S. during this period.

But as President Trump wanted many of these jobs to be made available to Americans both in general and in Silicon valley, than the contractors from Asia, and the only way in which this restriction could be made is by reinterpreting the existing laws with regard to H1B visa.
The period of pandemic has also come in support of the unemployment rate in the U.S. which has increased drastically and it became apparent that President Trump is compelled to let go many of the international workers as possible to replace them with Americans.
Effective 16thMay 2019, President Trump also introduced a new rule welcoming a new immigration paralegal system.

According to the new rule, replaces the green card category with the new ‘Build America’ visa and it will follow a point based system like the one already existing in modern countries. This sets a clear path for talent. President stated that instead of admitting immigrants randomly, this global criteria for the admission of diversion in the U.S. will help the country to build a greater economy.

Yet another immigration policy change that Trump introduced is to increase the proportion of skilled immigration from 12% to 57%. He stated that the present immigration system is fractured and is not paving the way for the talented immigrants. So, he proposed a new rule of the Merit-Based Immigration System. Irrespective of where the immigrants are born, future immigrants will learn English and pass a civic exam prior to admission. As against the random selection, this process improves the chances for techies with a valuable skill.
To a question in quora - How would a merit-based immigration system change the mix of immigrants legally entering the USA?

The opinion says it would bring a huge change. It is viewed that Latinos are less educated and thus the number of Latino immigrants would go down by huge numbers.
The Western European immigrants to the U.S. would be increasing as the salaries in the U.S are comparatively high as compared to the salaries in Europe and so many would prefer to work.

A major chunk of migration is also from China and India who wish to work and settle in the U.S. with high-skill set. However, republicans would not agree for such kind of immigration, while democrats opine that they would be disappointing Latinos, if they increase merit-based immigration intake.

Thus there are mixed views about the new immigration policy.

President Trump is of the opinion that the current immigration system is not giving much preference for the talented immigrants which is why a new rule of Merit-Based Immigration System is recommended and was unveiled.
