Sega kicks off the new year with a fresh update for Sonic Superstars, the 2D side-scrolling platformer released in October. While Sonic Frontiers took a 3D open-world approach, Superstars pays homage to Sonic's classic side-scrolling adventures. The game features a fast-paced 2D platforming experience where Sonic and friends join forces to thwart a trio of villains led by Dr. Eggman. Sonic Superstars introduces unlockable Chaos Emerald powers and offers both co-op and competitive multiplayer modes.
Despite falling short of Sega's sales expectations after its late 2023 launch, Sonic Team remains dedicated to supporting the game through online updates and DLC content. The latest update, labeled 1.15, is now live on major platforms. Notable additions include LEGO versions of Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, alongside Sonic and Eggman pre-order skins. A festive holiday character skin for Sonic was also added in December, aligning with a similar addition to Sonic Frontiers in late 2022.
