Gama
There are a lot of skeptics who feel that when it comes to games of brawn and strength, Indians by their shorter height and physique are unable to be world beaters in contact sports like wrestling. However such a statement is far from truth, as one man who never had any formal and scientific training emerged as the greatest wrestler from India as well as the only Indian who won the world title in wrestling.
Gama was a Punjabi Muslim and was born in Amritsar in 1882. He soon took to the Indian style of wrestling called 'phelwani' and made a significant mark for himself. However Gama whose real name was Ghulam Mohammed was lucky, as from a very young age he was able to get the patronage of Rajas and Maharajas in India. We must remember that at that time there was no organized sporting infrastructure in India and the only hope for a sportsman to succeed was in case he came under the aegis of a King or Maharajah. “polissonografia gama
Maharajah Bhawani Singh, the ruler of the princely state of Datia in Madhya Pradesh was the first to be the patron of the young wrestler and his brother Imam Bukhsh. Gama thus could concentrate on wrestling as all his needs were looked after by the Rajah of Datia.
Gama notched up victory after victory and by 1910 he had defeated all known local wrestlers in India and earned the title of 'Rustam -e - Zamana' a euphemism for world champion. But Gama was restive as he wanted to beat the best wrestlers in the world. He this set sail for England in 1910.
On reaching London, Gama publicly challenged any wrestler to beat him and promised that no one could last more than 30 minutes in a bout with him. This was thought of as a bluff, till he was matched with Stanislaus Zbyszko the then world d champion and Frank Gotch.
However before he met these wrestlers he was matched with the American Champion Benjamin Roller. He had two bouts with him and pinned the wrestler in less than 10 minutes to the mat. It was a great victory and the stage was set for a bout with Stanislaus. However despite the bout lasting over 2 hours Stanislaus could not get the better of Gama. In a subsequent bout Stanislaus failed to turn up and Gama was crowned the World Champion. “polissonografia taguatinga
The Maharajah of Patiala arranged for a bout in Patiala against Stanislaus in 1928. History records that Gama overthrew the world champion in less than a minute. It was great victory that will be forever cherished by all Indians who love wrestling.
