Industrial biotechnology is also referred as third wave biotechnology. And when it is full fletched to its maximum potential, industrial biotechnology could have a wider positive impact on world health care and agricultural sectors. Application of biotechnology in industrial processes could provide us with new products that could make wonders in the world stability. Industrial biotechnology is so new that its benefits are not that well known or understood by industries or common people.
For the better understanding of the merits of industrial biotechnology, we can analyze the phosphate water pollution problems that occurred in 1970s. Best biotech companies solved this problem by reducing the use phosphates in laundry detergent. It provided an alternative way for companies with the development of an enzyme that removed stains from clothes better than phosphates and thereby completely removing the water pollutant phosphate. A non-polluting bio-based enzyme was developed to improve the performance of the end product. This reduced phosphate-related algal blooms in surface waters around the globe and enabled consumers to get cleaner clothes with lower water temperatures.
Industrial biotechnology helps to maximize and optimize existing natural biochemical pathways that can be used in a much wider landscape. Biotech laboratories use specialized techniques to find and improve nature's enzymes to enhance the wealth of genetic diversity in microbial populations. Research are made on enzyme-producing microorganisms in the natural environment and then use their DNA probes to search at the molecular level for genes that produce enzymes with specific biocatalytic capabilities. These enzymes can be identified and characterized for their ability to function in specific industrial processes. If necessary, they can be improved with biotechnology techniques.
