"People are asking for WoTLK Classic Gold the ability go back in time and play WoW Classic in its original form," Birmingham said. "We wanted to create this, almost like a snapshot in time but we also want to have these progressive content unlocks. So things like, Blackwind Lair Ahn'Qiraj, as well as Naxxramas. We'd like these to unlock with time, as they are deemed appropriate by the players, as they progress through the various parts of content. At the same time the system in general, we'd like to be locked in at 1.12 at which we consider them to be the most comprehensive and balanced."
The idea of regular updates , as they initially appeared but raises the issue of expansions. Blizzard has released seven expansions in all. Even though later expansions such as Legion or Battle for Azeroth would feel unnatural in the Classic framework however, it is likely that some players will want to play earlier expansions, such as The Burning Crusade or Wrath of the Lich King -- in an environment similar to World of Warcraft Classic. Blizzard isn't committing to this, but also hasn't ruled it out.
"The community's desire to have WoW Classic is why we launched WoW Classic," said Birmingham. "So we're certainly willing to hear what you think about the idea. The thing we're focused on right this moment are WoW Classic. This is what we're committed to providing. We do not have plans to make any announcements beyond that."
