How to Repair and Grout Ceramic Shower Tile

  1. Remove the Old Grout

Utilizing a utility knife, remove the old grout from the spaces between the tiles. Cut from top to bottom and left to right through the space between the tiles using the knife. You might need to make cuts next to each tile and then pull out the center of the grout, depending on how wide the grout joints are. Old grout should be easily cut through with the knife; if it isn't, change the blade.

  1. Remove Any Grout Residue

Denatured alcohol can be used to clean the tile edges and get rid of any grout residue or dust. Allow the tiles to completely dry. silicone tile repair

  1. Remove Broken Tiles

Any cracked, chipped, or broken tiles should be broken up and removed. To break up a tile, hammer it firmly while holding a chisel at a 45-degree angle to the tile's center. According to Home Tips, take out the broken pieces and carefully chip away any remaining mortar from behind the tile.

  1. Install New Tiles

Install the fresh tiles. Using a margin trowel, apply thinset mortar to the backs of the tiles. On the wall, firmly press the tiles into place. Give the mortar 24 hours to cure.

  1. Apply New Grout

Use a grout float to evenly distribute grout between the tiles and grout the entire surround at once. This Old House advises spreading the float in multiple directions while holding the float at a 45-degree angle to the tiles to help pack the grout into place.

  1. Remove Excess Grout

When the grout resembles stiff putty after about 10 minutes of drying, wash the surface of the tiles with a grout sponge to remove any excess grout. Use a sponge that has been lightly dampened to scrub the shower walls in a circular motion until the excess grout is gone and the tiles are clean. As you work, rinse the sponge frequently to help prevent grout haze. Give the grout 24 hours to dry.

7. Caulk the Edges
The shower surround's corners and edges should be caulked. Each tile wall should have a bead of caulk applied around the outside and smoothed into place with your finger. Give the caulk 24 hours to dry.
