Hi-Rez Studios has officially revealed Smite 2, the sequel to its third-person MOBA sensation Smite, highlighting that the new title is constructed using Unreal Engine 5. This announcement comes almost a decade after the original Smite's full release, and Hi-Rez Studios has taken steps to address player inquiries regarding the transition from Smite to Smite 2, including the carryover of efforts and unlocks.
In Smite, players embody various gods and mythological entities in team-based battles, drawing inspiration from real-world pantheons like Greek mythology. With 129 playable gods at present, each assigned distinct combat roles, Smite's roster continues to expand. The game employs a free-to-play model, with hero unlocks achievable through in-game currencies such as "Favor" or "Gems," obtainable through normal gameplay or optional microtransactions.

Smite 2, built on Unreal Engine 5, is set to enter closed alpha testing in spring 2024. Hi-Rez encourages interested players to sign up in advance, as alpha access will be granted through email containing an access code for their chosen platform. The decision to rebuild Smite in Unreal Engine 5 was motivated by addressing the technical debt accumulated during its development in Unreal Engine 3. Currently in a pre-alpha state, Smite 2 will feature a limited roster of gods during alpha testing, and Hi-Rez confirms ongoing support for the original Smite alongside its sequel.
Smite 2 aims to facilitate cross-play across PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and the Steam Deck, with cross-progression contingent on partner approval. However, the transition to Smite 2 comes with certain considerations, such as the unavailability of most skins from Smite in Smite 2. Hi-Rez introduces Legacy Gems and Divine Legacy to acknowledge and reward Smite players for their dedication. Legacy Gems cover 50% of in-game purchases in Smite 2, while Divine Legacy tracks progress in Smite, offering rewards in both games.
