Just inside the door of my home is a little wicker basket Cognitiva Review about 12"X8"X8" sitting on a sideboard. On my bedside table is a similar wicker basket, as well as one just beside the door of my office at work. These are my dumping zones. These are where I put the things that I don't want to lose, and I need on a regular basis. It's where my keys go when I get home, or to the office. It's also where I store things like my sunglasses, my wallet, my cellphone, and other things I want to bring with me for the day. The dumping zone in my bedroom has things like any medicine I'm taking, an extra stick of deodorant, my bedtime reading, and other things that have a tendency to disappear on me, like my fingernail clippers. Those of you that are still in school may want to create a dumping zone in your locker, or let your school bag be your DZ. The secret to making these dumping zones work for you is two-fold.

Keep the number of DZ's to a minimum. I only have three, because the more DZ's I have the less effective they are. If you have too many it's too easy to forget which one you were using for what. Remember the more complicated the system, the less likely you are to use it. Empty your pockets into the DZ and repeat. It might be tough at first to remember to empty your pockets when you get home, to the office, or to school, but your hard work will pay off. You see what happens, is that these DZ's become your default spot for dropping things. Even if you're mind is focused on something else, you will absently mindedly dump your things in these spots. In a sense, you program your autopilot to store stuff in your DZ's.
