Another Super Rookie? 'National Team Captain' Kim Min-sol Declares He's Turning Pro

The Korean Ladies Professional Golf Association (KLPGA) Tour is about to get another 'super rookie'.

National team captain and ace Kim Min-sol (18) has announced her decision to turn professional. Kim Min-sol's representatives announced that she turned 18 in June and will turn professional on July 1, and will begin her career in earnest.

Kim became a full member of the KLPGA after winning the team event at the World Amateur Team Championships last year. She will be eligible to compete in the Dream Tour seeding event on Aug. 19, without having to go through the selection process. She is on a roadmap to secure a seeding on the KLPGA Tour for the 2025 season through the Dream Tour.

Kim began playing golf in the fourth grade and won her first title at the 2019 Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Junior Golf Championship. She won the Blue One Bae Korean Junior Golf Championships in 2022 and the Songam Bae Amateur Championships to earn a spot on the national team in 2023. The team won a silver medal in the team event at the Hangzhou Asian Games and a team title at the World Amateur Team Championships in Abu Dhabi. At the Naver Trophy Team Championships in April, she finished second individually and won the team title.

At 1.78 meters, Kim is a smooth and accurate driver from around 270 yards (approximately 247 meters). She also possesses strong determination and integrity. As an amateur, she excelled on the KLPGA Tour and LPGA Tour.

In 2022, she was the runner-up in the first and second rounds of the LPGA Tour's BMW Ladies Championship and finished 10th in the final round. Last year, she made the cut in all five starts on the KLPGA Tour. This year, she finished second at the KLPGA Tour's Gyochon 1991 Ladies Open in May.

Last year, the KLPGA Tour was hotly contested by Kim Min-byul and Hwang Yoo-min, who were dubbed as 'super rookies'. In a back-and-forth battle, Kim beat out Hwang and Bang to win the once-in-a-lifetime Rookie of the Year award.

While the trio has become the centerpiece of the tour this season, South Korea's Yoo Hyun-jo has been leading the Rookie of the Year points this season.

It will be interesting to see if Kim Min-sol, who has been a standout since her amateur days, can revitalize the KLPGA Tour after turning professional.
