Thank god Jagex started at a moment when it was still an independent company. When the player base started to stagnate in the late 2000s, a publisher would likely have shut down Jagex. It's true that Raven Software started laying people off, while Warzone generated billions of dollars, so even the game's success could spell doom for the humans who play the game.

The successes we encounter are like variations on the standard. The stars had to align to allow Among Us to find its player base long after launch, and arguably the biggest case before that without the assistance of a major publisher was Undertale back in 2017.

This is the reason why RuneScape The Beginning 20 Years isn't just essential to all fans of the game, but for all those who are concerned about the direction that the gaming time is moving in. It's an affirmation that we need to support the indie gaming scene that is always fighting for attention in an enormous market.

However, most importantly it's an opportunity to be proud of what we have achieved since our beginnings. Gaming can appear to be a sexy and disgusting place at times (because it often is) however, at the heart of it all the developers are enthusiastic with a passion for gaming to be able to share with us.

Many of us are blessed with wonderful childhood memories running around Gielinor, not because some giant company sold us an item or service, but because three brothers were passionate, along with their parents, who believed in their children.
