IUI stands for Intrauterine Insemination, which is a very short procedure commonly used for sub-fertile couples. Sub-fertile couples are the ones who are having the trouble of delay in conception. Nowadays, researchers and scientists have come up with accurate details on when the surgery should be performed. Reaching this destination took them miles of the journey. When they first started, after numerous trials, errors, and optimizing the results, they couldn’t tell anything for sure.

But after years of dedicated hard work and multiple trials, they now concluded that IUI can be performed 6 hours before ovulation.

What is IUI Procedure?

The IUI Technique involves the following steps:

1. Collection of the sperm sample: This can either be achieved by Masturbation or through a medical procedure called Testicular aspiration. This procedure includes injecting a needle directly into the testicles and retrieving a semen sample. In a few cases, frozen semen is also utilized.

2. Semen Washing: The components in the semen may harm the female’s genital organs and may harm her body. Sperm washing refers to the separation of low- and high-quality sperms from the semen and rejecting the unhealthy or immobile sperms. It is performed in the laboratory.

3. Ovulation Monitoring: As discussed before, the timing is crucial for IUI Technique. There are various ways to do this. As the ovaries are capable of producing one egg every month, Ovarian Stimulation is done to demand multiple eggs from the ovaries. This is carried out by hormonal treatment. The reason why multiple eggs are needed is that if one egg fails to fertilize, there are chances of the other eggs getting fused. Hormonal treatment includes injecting Follicle Stimulation Hormone and Luteinising Hormones for the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Apart from these, different medications for egg maturation, preventing pre-mature egg release, and medications for implantation are prescribed.

4. Injecting the sperms: Using a long, thin, and flexible catheter, the doctor injects a syringe consisting of the washed and healthy semen sample. This procedure is mildly painful to not at all painful. In some cases, the female may experience mild cramps. This procedure takes only a few minutes.

After the IUI treatment procedure, it is highly recommended for the females to not live any heavy weights or do any workouts. It is also advised by the doctors to take bed rest for a few days until implantation. It increases the chances of conception.
However, besides taking precautions, monitoring the ovulation period is very important as it highly reflects on whether to get the surgery done and also sheds light on the chances of conceiving
