In many situations, Stress and College Students go hand in hand. And why shouldn’t they? College Students face some of the greatest pressures and struggles in college. For many who are coming straight out of their parent’s home, it is the first time they’ve had to wash their stinky socks, attempt to cook themselves a decent meal, and learn to manage their time between academics, extracurricular activities, and possibly that part time job at the library. In dealing with Stress and College Students, there are many ways to offer support and ways College Students themselves can deal with the pressure.
1. Making a schedule
This might seem obvious, but many College Students struggle with scheduling out their week with the many different demands they have to deal with. Fortunately, many colleges know this and provide planners that students can use to organize their notes, write down homework, and notate their work schedules. The trick is to use it! Put that planner on the desk, front and center, so that you, or your college kid, will be constantly seeing it. This helps keep it out from under the bed or accidentally stashed in a duffel bag somewhere. If you need to complete a task in a college or write a research paper on a historical person, you should immediately write down the deadline for its execution and highlight the days in your planner, to do it in parts. So it will be easy for you and everything will be done on time. Next tip is to bring it along everywhere and write everything down. Fortunately, with technology being so sophisticated, there are many electronic apps and tools that can be used in lieu of paper products. Find what works and use it.
2. Using college resources and support services
Because stress and college students is a usual combination, colleges have beefed up their support services in the interest of helping students be the best they can be. Many colleges offer a writing center or math lab where students can receive direct assistance from tutors who are there to help. If not, many students make themselves available for tutoring all over campus, as a way of earning a little extra money or adding a bulletin on their resume. For disabled or low-income students, many colleges have Access offices and programs that serve low-income or disadvantaged students. Sometimes these services are not well advertised but it doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Asking lots of questions and seeking out the answers is the best way to find out what resources may help you combat stress. And let’s not forget the Student Health Center and Counseling Centers. Being mentally and physically healthy is an important part of keeping stress levels under control so making sure to get regular checkups and doing a check in with a counselor can be important.
3. Creating a budget
For a lot of students, especially in today’s economy, worry and struggle with money. As students are known for being “poor” or short on disposable cash, it’s important to know how to create a budget so it doesn’t all get ferreted away on midnight coffee sessions or other recreational activities. Being able to take what money you do have and assigning a certain portion to each bill or upcoming expense you can predict, will help you determine how much spending money you have. Take that spending money, cut it in half and put one half in the bank, and you’re on your way to creating an emergency fund. It takes a lot of discipline but it doesn’t have to be pure agony. Find fun ways to save money, whether it’s taking the bus around town, using the college food bank, or volunteering at your college’s or city’s organic farm in exchange for produce.
While stressed out college students may seem unavoidable, there are ways to not only keep stress and worry under control but to create opportunities for growth and self-discipline. College is often said to be the best years of life but they’re only the best if you make the best of them. Nip stress in the bud and use all the resources at your disposal to make sure those years really shine!
