Background on Air Fresheners

The air freshener aisle at the store, with its endless rows of synthetic fragrances and chemical-filled ingredients to spray in the privacy of our priceless homes, gives me the creeps.

Remember that the military invented the first air freshener in 1948 to aerosolized pesticides. Beyond that, not much has changed. However, manufacturers improved performance, toughness, and longevity over the following 20 years by developing and evolving the designs. Like with most things, they were able to reduce the cost of production significantly.

As I mentioned, the air freshener aisle gives me that uneasy feeling because it represents a society where profits come before people. It instils in us the notion that we smell bad and that we should do everything in our power to get rid of any trace of the natural world by dousing ourselves in chemicals.

It is known that plug-in air fresheners with more natural-smelling fragrances pose a fire risk. As stated by the U.S. Around 1,900 fires were reported between 2010 and 2021, with these plug-in Air Fresheners being the cause, according to the United States Fire Administration (USFA). They remain on the shelves despite this; profits come before people.

How to Make Essential Oil Room Spray?

Okay, let's get started; let's go!

1) Addition of Rose Water or a Hydrosol is optional, but do it now. But don't forget to cut back on the distilled water. (For instance, if you only need 150ml of distilled water to make the 250ml volume required, use 100ml of hydrosol instead.)
2) In the absence of hydrosols, carefully pour 250ml (8.45 fl oz) of distilled water into the bowl.
3) Pour 200ml (6.7 fl oz) of vodka into the bowl containing the water.
4) Insert the tiny measuring jug with all of your essential oils into it. Take note of the essential oil's final volume. The same amount of essential oils as Polysorbate is required. You will need 5ml of Polysorbate for every 5ml of essential oils (for example).
5) Polysorbate 20 or 80 should be added in the same volume and carefully combined with the essential oils.
6) Using Polysorbate but not? That's okay; just add four times as much witch hazel to your volume of essential oils. (For example, if you have 5ml of essential oils, you will need 20ml of witch hazel, which is 4 x 5ml.) Mix thoroughly by stirring.
7) Add to the large bowl and mix thoroughly while stirring gently.
8) Pour into your Dark Amber Glass Bottle using a funnel.
9) This is the time when you might need to top off your bottle with distilled water, depending on whether you used Polysorbate or Witch Hazel earlier. Keep in mind that the pump straw absorbs some of the volumes, so fill it only halfway or it will overflow.
10) Store with a tight lid in a dark, cool location that is always at the ideal temperature.
11) Include a label that lists ALL of the ingredients.
12) Don't forget to prime your pump before using it; give it a few pumps until the spray begins.
