Can a Flood Cause Illness?

Many are worried about cleaning up flood water in their business or home. Certainly, this water is dirty and could cause illness. That is why many should go to water removal experts to get it cleaned. Although the fear of illness is usually larger than it needs to be, there are a few things that should be considered before trying to do it yourself.

1. Is the flood a large, city-wide disaster? If the flood was caused by a large dam breaking or a hurricane, there is a chance that the flood waters cover a largely populated area. If this is the case, the chance of illness being spread is greater but not terrible unless many people are displaced. Be sure to speak to officials before returning to you building to clean it out.

2. Is the septic tank affected? If there is sewage water, care needs to be taken to not get ill. Plastic boots and gloves are encouraged in smaller floods and higher protection necessary for larger ones.

3. Do you have a cut? If you have any cut or opening in the skin, your risk of getting a water-borne disease increases. Take care to protect yourself beforehand and then wash and disinfect the area thoroughly afterward.
