When looking to renovate the basement plumbing, be sure to take into consideration the possibility of flooding. Adding a bathroom in the basement is the most difficult place to add a bathroom because you have to cut through thick concrete to add the pipes. Also, generally an ejector is necessary to push the water up against gravity and into the sewer system. Installing an ejector sometimes requires excavation.
In order to excavate a basement, a jackhammer can be used to break up the thin concrete in the basement floor. Be careful to have plastic walls around the area and use a fan to let the dust leave. Also, fill the area in with gravel so that the loose dirt will not move and cause cracking in the basement floor.
If not already installed, consider adding a sump pump below the basement floor to prepare against flooding.
