Window Replacement

We do energy audits for many businesses. One common theme we see is that the windows in the building are causing the electric bill to skyrocket. Sometimes the cost of replacing the windows can decrease the electric bill so much that it can pay for itself in a short amount of time. There a few things that must be considered when choosing they type of window

Climate - If you live in a mild climate area, a single pane may work. But if you are looking to be more energy efficient or live in an area with climate extremes, a double pane window is recommended. Some cold areas require triple pane windows, which have proven to save 2%-3% of your energy bill.

U and R factors - The R-factor of the glass is the value of the energy efficiency in the window. The higher the R-factor the better. The U-factor is the rate that the glass conducts non-solar heat. The lower the U-factor, the better.

Frame - There are so many choices for window frames it can make a new home builder go crazy. Some like wood frames, that, although sometimes require more maintenance, also can be easily matched to other windows in the building. Other materials include aluminum or vinyl shell which are often used in new buildings. The vinyl frames are cheaper and require less maintenance (they don't need to be repainted).
