What is the right amount for applying each skincare product?

When we talk about the application of skincare products, we come across directive words such as dab, apply, coat, slather, and more. We are rarely presented with the exact amount, leaving our assumptions to fate. Imagine using too much of an expensive serum to receive no added benefit or too little of that lightweight moisturiser that leads to no result at all.

It is true that the product type matters so does its quantity. You may wonder how much facial serum, cleanser, and toner to use for the perfect glow. The following is a guide to answer all your questions:

Cleanser

As satisfying as it may be to squeeze cleanser into your palms and lather it onto your face, you are simply wasting the product. Too much cleanser can dry out your skin. Hence, sticking to a coin size amount is important regardless of its consistency and type. If you use a pump bottle, one pump is more than enough to cover your face and two for your neck.

Physical exfoliators

A dime size is generally sufficient to cover your face and neck area. Use smaller beads for the face as it is gentler and does not tear down the skin barrier. Gently massage the product for 30 seconds to a minute and rinse the excess with lukewarm water. Exfoliate two to three times a week by applying the exfoliator on your fingertips in circular motions.

Toners

Add a few drops to your palm and pat the face toners onto your skin. You can layer up your hydrating toners by adding multiple dime size amounts onto your skin and patting it on after each layer.

Body scrubs

They are great for achieving glowing skin. However, over-exfoliating and harsh rubbing can damage it. For your body, scoop two grape size amounts of scrub and gently circulate it on your arms and legs. Remember to exfoliate on damp skin else it can get too abrasive. Add a few water droplets to ease the motion.

Serums

A facial serum comes with a dropper for hygiene reasons. You should apply only a few drops onto your face. A pea size amount is enough to give your skin a boost. You can limit the amount of serum you use by applying tiny drops in four to five areas around your face, such as your cheeks, forehead, chin, and nose. Gently pat it out. You will notice that the small amount goes a long way.

Moisturisers

The amount of moisturiser to use depends on the climate, skin type, and age. The standard amount would be two to three pumps. Even if your skin feels parched, do not slather on large amounts of moisturisers, as applying too much cream prevents penetration into the skin.
