Sony has ambitious plans for its next generation of hardware for virtual reality with plans in the near future to get 2 million copies of the PSVR 2 headset ready by March of next year.
Production of the VR headset is said to have started with the start of September (via Bloomberg) and has not yet encountered problems with the supply chain. With the PS5 remaining highly sought-after because of its limited availability since its launch in November 2020, Sony also plans to keep more consoles on shelves in early 2023 according to Bloomberg's sources.
PSVR 2 isn't yet set to receive a date beyond 2023, but Sony is attempting to ensure that it has enough PS5 consoles that will play games with the new headset. The headset will work only with PS5 and will not be compatible with backwards-compatible PSVR games.
The only thing we know about the hardware is that it has several impressive specs. Like it's predecessor the PS5 as well as its DualSense controller, Sony added haptic feedback, adjustable triggers, eye-tracking, inside-out tracking in addition to 3D stereo into the system, that hasn't yet been given the price at which it will retail.
"PSVR 2 seems poised to be a shot in the arm for it in the gaming space," Tamoor Hussain wrote in GameSpot's PSVR 2 preview. "It is yet to see if PSVR 2 will garner widespread excitement, but at very least I'm more confident that it will bring us one step closer to realizing its full potential."
