Gear Motors - The Optimal Solution for High Performance Applications

Today, industrial gear motors such as spur and planetary gear motors are the go-to solution for
a number of hi-tech applications. Only by selecting the most appropriate motor for a given application can the best performance be attained. Without specialist knowledge of motors and their varying specifications, it can be difficult to determine which is the best motor solution for a given application.

Let’s have a deeper dive into the two main forms of geared motors:

Planetary gear motors

This geared motor, as its name suggests, mimics the rotation of planetary systems. The sun gear spins as the input shaft moves, with planetary gears moving around the sun to produce the output. The planetary gears themselves are rotated as the input shaft moves.

The torsional load of a planetary motor is divided across a number of gears, which further enhances efficiency. Torque is the force that is produced by gears in a twisting motion. Mechanical principles dictate that if torque is applied to an object then it will bend. The torque input is generally greater when several gears operate at the same time.

The arrangement of planetary gear motors generates less strain on individual gears, which lowers the chance of motor failure and the need for frequent maintenance.

Spur gear motors

A spur-gear motor has the potential to be the most economical form of gearing arrangement as it has a simple design and is therefore quick and easy to produce. For applications which require only a small amount of torque power, spur motors are a very good choice.
Whilst there are several options when it comes to choosing cylindrical gear motors, spur gear motors are the most common. They feature a shaft that’s covered by a central bore and a cylinder body with an outer edge that is surrounded by straight, parallel teeth.

Spur gear motors are used to increase and decrease the speed of motion. They can produce more torque force by transferring motion and power from one shaft to another.

Both forms of motor described here can be constructed from a variety of metals, including brass and titanium, plus a small quantity of plastic. Steel-cut gears are incredibly reliable and therefore well-suited for applications which require high-torque.
