The corona virus pandemic has changed life on earth in unimaginable ways. So many things that once we took for granted have now become distant dreams. Going out for a movie at a multiplex, shopping at the mall, eating out at a restaurant, working out in the gym, strolls in the park or beach – all these activities that we perform ed before without even thinking, have become like luxuries. Meeting friends and loved ones is now fraught with danger, as the devious virus takes over our bodies stealthily, with no tell-tale symptoms sometimes. What if we pass it on to an old and immune-compromised parent or someone with co-morbidities? Worse, the virus keeps mutating into more and more variants which are more infectious and deadly. Even though vaccines are available now, they are in short supply, so the pace of vaccination is very slow, and meanwhile, the virus rampages, searching for new hosts to colonize. A nightmarish scenario indeed!

Even nations that had gone into unlock mode are having second thoughts as infections caused by new variants surge. It is like we are living in a sandcastle that is in danger of being washed away by a tidal wave. Life has become uncertain and unpredictable for people everywhere, as they try to cope with the loss of loved ones, jobs, businesses, and even hope. Even a sneeze makes us panic. It is true that many people have survived the infection and regained their health, but there is so much we don’t know about Covid-19 and its effects on the human body that it still evokes fear in us. The virus seems to choose its victims randomly, for some are asymptomatic, some recover quickly, some take months, and some die within hours. Some even get infected twice and thrice. So much for natural immunity. There are also breakthrough infections in people who have been fully vaccinated.

To top it all, even the vaccines are said to have side-effects like blood clots which can become fatal, though they affect only a negligible part of the population. It may be true, but nobody wants to take a gamble, which leads to vaccine hesitancy among some people. Not to mention the stigma around the affliction, which makes people shun you as if you are a leper. As lockdowns continue, people are feeling hopeless and depressed about life and the future. It is as if there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

It does sound scary, but we need to hold on to hope and wait for the virus to run its course. In the meantime, we can follow pandemic protocols like masking and social distancing and also get vaccinated as soon as possible. One more important thing is to boost our immunity by eating nutritious food, doing regular exercise, yoga, and meditation. As Indians, we can also draw on the goodness of traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda and Siddha, which offer herbal remedies to boost immunity and reduce the symptoms of illness so that one can avoid hospitalization.

In fact, there is a concoction called Kabasura kudineer, which our ancestors used to drink to keep colds and coughs at bay. Unfortunately, many people scorn traditional medicines and prefer to depend solely on Western medicine or allopathic drugs, many of which may have side effects that are not immediately apparent. For example, steroids which are used in Covid treatment can trigger diabetes. But Ayurvedic and Siddha medicines use plants and herbs which do not harm the body.

Kabasura Kudineer Chooranam, as it is called, is a traditional formulation often used to treat common respiratory ailments like flu, cough, and cold. Siddha practitioners aver that it can relieve symptoms caused by respiratory illnesses. ‘Kaba’ denotes ‘Kapha’ or ‘phlegm’, Asura is the herb that relieves the symptoms caused by the ailments, and Kudineer means ‘concoction’. It is a drink that boosts immunity and is made using various herbs and water. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, antioxidant, hepato-protective, anti-asthmatic, anti-pyretic, and immunomodulatory properties.

It can boost lung function, improve respiratory mechanisms and treat infectious conditions of the respiratory system. The Chooranam, which most people were not even aware of previously, has now become popular due to its therapeutic qualities and ability to treat Covid symptoms and also prevent infection. It uses 15 ingredients.
