I will move a little off the rails here, and wonder when that threw them for a significant loop. Children (can be) more accommodating and they surely have a much smaller voice in regards to feedback.

For me it is not even that, it's that the second onwards profiles have limited skills. This fuckin blows and stopped me from becoming the game. Otherwise I would have loved to discuss an island with my husband.
It's not ideal, but it really does not hamstring you like you think/people say.
Personally, I enjoy sharing the island with my wife and daughter. I definitely understand wanting you yourself too. As always, more options and buy Animal Crossing Bells flexibility are constantly better.
