Gantry Robot – The Automated Gantry Robot for Place and Pick Applications

Gantry robots are a fantastic solution for precision automation and consist of programmable machines that move on specific portal structures. This industrial robot works on a linear axis which allows simple and precise movement of fixed systems.
Gantry robots are usually larger and better suited for heavy industrial applications. They are particularly suitable for customer-specific automation environments, as portal systems can be designed according to environmental requirements and robots can be programmed accordingly. Depending on their size, they are often used for selection and placement applications where a high rate of repeatability is expected, or for parts placement and welding applications. They can even be used for laser cutting and gluing, and offer precision, speed, and consistency difficult to achieve with the human hand. Because gantry robots reduce the need for manual human intervention, they often increase efficiency in work environments.
Gantry Robot is a subsidiary of Cartesian or linear robot, also known as RTU or transfer robot. So the first question should be, what is a Cartesian robot? Sounds like a Cartesian coordinate system. This is a robot that can move in three dimensions x, y, z. X is the floor in one direction, Y is the floor in the other, and Z is protruding into space. This type of robot has limitations in terms of load, because it basically consists of three cantilever beams stacked on top of each other. This problem can be solved by implementing a gantry robot. In other words, to cover great distances with a Cartesian robot, you need very long arms and boom weights. Even when moving small objects, this can be significant and require large robotic arms and propulsion.
Gantry robot applications are very wide due to their flexible design, load capacity and ease of programming. Removing the console part of the Cartesian robot increases its capabilities dramatically with the weight it can withstand. This means that a small, well-positioned robot can handle and move more loads over longer distances. The type of gantry robot has not changed drastically as it is designed for specific tasks. Each task defines the robot's specifications. In general, a gantry robot is an air system that works from top to bottom. This allows him to take full advantage of the work area and use the entire work area except where the supports are.
