Is There a Spiritual Red Herring? One That Causes Us to Find "Heaven" in the Wrong Places?

Does this mean that we should never engage in actions that we know will hurt others? Of course not - there are times when it is quite justifiable to take action to protect yourself even though these same actions will hurt others. The key is to not be malicious and mean for the sake of being mean. Carrying out hurtful actions without a clear sense that you do it not primarily to hurt but to justifiably protect yourself or the interests of others is likely to leave you being as much a victim of those actions as those they are aimed at.

For this reason, be careful of not only what you do to others, but why you do it. Do unto others as you would have it be done to you. Words are such an important part of our lives - we say them, we feel them, we try to live them, they motivate, they generate hurt at times, they provide joy. But most importantly, they help to make life such a blast. I was in downtown Little Rock last week. It was dark but still about 90 degrees and humid. Across the river was a stadium full of people watching a minor league baseball game and the highway behind us was full of people on their way... somewhere.

There were seven of us downtown that night. We were outsiders. This was not our home, this was not where we "belonged." We came with cold water, some apples and a few pairs of shoes. It was the least we could do... literally, the least we could do. We took a couple hours out of our night to go spend some time with people who don't get a lot of personal attention.
