A Beginner’s Guide to Staying Safe on Tiktok

Our lives are today inseparable from social media and many of us take to apps such as TikTok to take a break, watch some fun videos, express ourselves by sharing. TikTok’s beauty is that it is a platform where people let their hair down and not care about what others think and feel about the unique content that they share. TikTok allows you to be yourself!

If you’re a regular TikTok App user, then you need to remember that along with having fun, it is important to stay safe and ensure that your friends and followers are also safe on TikTok.

Here are some ways you can do this:

Click “Download Off” Option: If you are a regular poster of TikTok videos, you will be aware of the fact that you can post any type of content you can as along as its within TikTok’s community guidelines. Whether it is your dog ad-libbing lyrics to Frozen’s Let It Go or you dancing to the latest Bollywood number, you’re assured of views, but you may want to remember to turn off the ‘Download Video’ option if you're concerned about having these videos freely available on other social media platforms.

Be Careful When It Comes To Taking Videos Of Children: TikTok has a minimum age-group cut off of 13 years as part of its age-gating feature, but there are chances that you may want to post a video of a younger sibling, a niece or nephew, or your own child on TikTok. While there are plenty of well-meaning individuals who may think this is cute or hilarious, there are some anti-social elements who may misuse the video that you have posted on your TikTok profile.

Immediately Report Abuse: For every 19 positive comments, social media is always full of one negative comment that gets seen more than the positive comments. If you chance upon such negativity on your TikTok profile or on the TikTok profile of your friend or loved one, report it immediately. Abusive comments could range from derogatory language to graphic comments. You need to be mindful of this and stay alert! Remember, safety is a shared responsibility and you can do your bit to make places like TikTok even safer.

Block the Abusers: TikTok like all social media sites has its set of community guidelines. Violation of these guidelines can get your account blocked and your content permanently deleted. Also, TikTok India follows rules and guidelines set by the Information Technology Act put forth by the Government of India. Be mindful of the comments you receive and the content you share and take affirmative action to report.

Know Of The Digital Wellbeing Feature: TikTok has a digital wellbeing section that has several features, including the ability to allow users to control time spent on TikTok, as well as to limit the appearance of content that may not be appropriate for all audiences.

If you adhere to all these guidelines, you’ll be sure to have a safe and enjoyable experience on TikTok. If you not, then maybe it’s time to start, take a few minutes out and update your account setting to improve your online safety as well as your digital wellbeing.
